So I wasn’t going to do one of these…
But with all this hate in the fandom, I believe I need to express my opinion, as many already have. I refuse to judge Korra based off of Avatar, but for this I have to sacrifice making a comparison. I want to address the Mako hate.
Mako is seen as a cheater, a backstabber, and any other names one could think of. One scene, from “The Aftermath”, has Mako telling Korra that if she continues calling Hiroshi and Equalist, he will no longer be her friend. It comes off quite harsh and ignorant. But lets go back to Avatar. In “Bato of the Water Tribe” Aang hides a map from Bato that details the location of Sokka and Katara’s father. When he admits that he has it, Sokka decides to leave Aang to find his father, and Katara joins him. The two of them actually leave Aang for a period of time, forcing him to face his destiny on his own. This is after they have referred to Aang as their family. Comparing these actions to Mako’s, there is not much of a difference. And one thing I admire about this scene in TLOK is that Korra, despite this attack from Mako, still knows what she is doing. Both Aang, Sokka, and Katara made mistakes in their situation.
As for Mako’s affections for Korra while dating Asami, as a teen myself, I have seen this situation many times. Here I believe everybody has a fault except Asami. Mako needs to make a decision, and apologize with Asami. Whether he chooses Korra or Asami, an apology needs to be made. Korra should talk to him, as should Bolin. Although judging from “Out of the Past” he doesn’t suspect anything is up. Poor Asami is having to deal with this, and in my opinion, she is handling it well. She does not take the blame out on Korra, which I have seen many girls do in these situations. Overall, if Mako makes no apology to her, she does not deserve him, and she needs to do something about it. Korra also should address it.
As an opinion, please take what I have said in with open ears. I do not expect everyone to agree with me. I only wish to formally address the situation. Now may peace be made in this fandom, and may we join hands together in preparation of the finale.
